Egypt Alerts UN Over Ethiopia’s Nile Dam Operation
(MENAFN) Egypt declared on Tuesday that it had forwarded a letter to the UN Security Council cautioning against Ethiopia’s unilateral management of its newly inaugurated Nile dam, calling the action a “breach” of international regulations.
In the message, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized that Addis Ababa’s launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) amounted to “an unlawful unilateral act” that could not be validated.
The letter asserted, “Any misconceptions that Cairo would turn a blind eye to its existential interests in the Nile are pure delusions,” underscoring that Egypt “will not allow Ethiopia to impose unilateral control over shared water resources.”
Cairo affirmed it retains the right to employ every measure sanctioned under global law and the UN Charter “to defend the existential interests of its people.”
The ministry highlighted that although Egypt has shown the utmost restraint and prioritized dialogue over confrontation, Ethiopia has “pursued intransigent positions, stalled negotiations, and sought to impose a fait accompli.”
It added that Addis Ababa’s recent conduct marked “a new violation that adds to a long list of breaches of international law, including the Security Council’s presidential statement of Sept. 15, 2021.”
As of now, there has been no immediate reaction from Ethiopia regarding Cairo’s statement.
On Tuesday, the Ethiopian administration officially inaugurated the GERD on the Blue Nile after 14 years of building, a project that has consistently been contested by downstream states Egypt and Sudan concerning its filling and operational methods.
